Welcome

Originally established in 2001, this website devoted to the Austrian composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold is currently undergoing changes to improve its accessibility.

While in transition, a link to the former main page will be available in order to provide access to previously posted material until such time as it is appropriately redistributed under our new format and structure.

We welcome the comments and feedback of visitors and Korngold enthusiasts.

Der Ring des Polykrates and Violanta Together Again

Korngold's first operatic success was with the double-bill, one-act comic & verismo opera pairing, Der Ring des Polykrates and Violanta. Not performed, together sine 1936, Theater Augsburg presents this May & June the first paired-staging since 1936. See our Events page.

Symphony in F#

Korngold's rarely performed Symphony in F# is programmed for the Proms 2013. Don't miss this opportunity to hear the work that Dimitri Mitropolous praised in 1959 as "the perfect modern work." The German translation of Brendan G. Carroll's The Last Prodigy (1997) is now available. Translated by Gerold Gruber, the book also features updated indexes for sound recordings and DVD releases. A "New" tote Stadt

In time for the 30th anniversary, Deutsche Oper Berlin's 1983 production of "Die tote Stadt" is released on DVD by Arthaus Musik as of October 2012. Details here.

  • 2 April 2013 sees the European release of the first complete recording of Much Ado About Nothing, op. 11, in the original chamber orchestra version, performed by the University of North Carolina School of the Art Symphony Orchestra, John Mauceri conducting
  • 8 April 2013 is the release date for Arabella Steinbacher's recording of Korngold's Violin Concerto in D, op. 35 on the Pentatone label

  • Lara Downes, solo piano, includes the Moderato from Korngold's Piano Sonata #2 on her new CD "Exlies' Cafe" on the Steinway & Sons label
  • the New York Piano Quartet's reading of the Suite for Two Violins, Cello, and Piano Left Hand, op. 23 on the newly established Urlicht label,
  • the Four Songs of Farewell (Vier Lieder des Abschieds), op. 14 recorded by Roderick Williams and Helmut Deutsch at Wigmore Hall, UK on 25 Feb 2011, and
  • the Helsinki Philharmonic performing the Sinfonietta, op. 5, coupled with the world-premiere recording of the complete incidental music to Much Ado About Nothing (Viel Lärm um Nichts), op. 11.

MUCH ADO ABOUT UPDATES

Work on the video production of UNC School of the Arts' April 2012 production of Much Ado About Nothing is still underway, but the editing and mixing of the recording of Korngold's complete score is complete. The video is planned for local TV broadcast (Southeast US) later this year. The audio recording is planned to be released publicly - distribution details are not yet available.

January 2013 update: We are unaware of this broadcast took place, or is still in the future. We will post updates when we have them.
