Bo Skovhus singing Pierrot's Lied from Korngold's opera
at Gran Teatro del Liceu, Barcelona, 2006
Kiri Te Kanawa sings the aria "Glück das mir verblieb" (a.k.a. Mariettalied or Marietta's Song) from Erich Korngold's opera Die Tote Stadt at the gala honoring the retirement of Met General Manager Joseph Volpe. The clip is from May 20, 2006. I was in attendance that night. Some of the applause and bravas for Dame Kiri have been cut from the telecast (because of time restraints). The excited enthusiasm of the audience that night for Kiri really isn't captured properly in this clip (the audience sounded much louder live). This I believe will almost certainly have been her last appearance at the Metropolitan Opera
Heldentenor James King in the final scene of Die Tote Stadt.
Karan Armstrong & James King sing "Glück das mir verblieb" (a.k.a. Mariettalied or Marietta's Song) from Erich Korngold's opera Die Tote Stadt. Berlin, 1983
James King & Karan Armstrong in the ghost scene from the end of Act I of Erich Korngold's unfairly neglected masterpiece, Die Tote Stadt. Berlin, 1983. In this scene, the ghost of Paul's dead wife, Marie, returns to him to confront him over his new infatuation with Marietta. Paul assures her that he only sees her in Marietta ("nur dich seh ich in ihr"). They each sing the line, "Unsre Liebe war, ist und wird sein" ("Our love was, is, and will be"), to the reoccurring theme from the famed Marietta's Lied from earlier in the opera.
